W. Otis Gustafson, 44, of School Street, in the Mill River section New Marlborough, an actor and designer of stage sets in local and New York City theaters, died of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome on Friday in Western Massachusetts Hospital in Westfield.
He was a founding member of Sunshine Stage Company in Lenox, the forerunner of Berkshire Public Theater.
Born in Plainfield, N.J., he later moved to Massachusetts, and was a 1967 honors graduate of Needham High School. He was a cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College in 1971, where he was a Senior Fellow and a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
He attended Indiana University for two years on a graduate fellowship in theater arts.
He leaves his parents, Harry L. and Marjorie (Jones) Gustafson, and two brothers, his twin Robert of Rock Hill, S.C. and Harry III of Middletown, R.I. A memorial service will be held Tuesday afternoon at St. James Episcopal Church, with a reception following in the parish room of the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Berkshire AIDS Coalition, or to Western Massachusetts Hospital, in care of Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington.
