Ann M. Nemitz of Shrewsbury, a physician in family practice and an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, died Sunday at home. She was 50.

Born in Detroit, Dr. Nemitz moved to Needham as a child. A graduate of Needham High School, she received her bachelor's degree from Marquette University and her medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Dr. Nemitz was employed by the US Public Health Service for several years. She then practiced medicine in Wallingford, Conn., before going to the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester.

In May 1997, Dr. Nemitz was voted Outpatient Teacher of the Year. In the last year of her life, she worked on the development and initial delivery of a course titled, "Death and Dying" for her fourth- year medical students.

In recognition of her achievements at UMass Medical School, her friends and colleagues dedicated a room at the Hahnemann Family Health Center in Worcester in her memory. They will hold an annual lecture on "Death and Dying" in her memory.

She leaves a daughter, Megan Bird of Shrewsbury; her parents, Dot and Bill Nemitz of Wellesley; four brothers, Michael of Burlington, Vt., Bill of South Portland, Maine, Chuck of Natick and Chris of Cambridge; and two sisters, Mary Peg Combs of Winchester, Va., and Meg Cocks of Marlborough.

The funeral will be private. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in West Roxbury.

A memorial service with be held Sept. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the Beechwood Hotel in Worcester.
