Richard George McKenzie '68

Richard George McKenzie of Charlestown and West Yarmouth, a former lawyer, died Tuesday at his summer home. He was 48.

Born in Boston, he was educated at Needham High School. He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, and later graduated summa cum laude at Suffolk University with a law degree.

He practiced law as a bankruptcy attorney for 20 years. He began practicing at Kahn and McKenzie and later branched off into his own practice.

He was also an actor and director who began his career at the age of 10 at the Boston Children's Theater. He continued acting and directing at the Vokes Theater in Wayland, where he also served on the board.

An avid sailor, he began at the Lewis Bay Yacht Club at the age of 8. He raced in every Figawi regatta beginning in 1978 and captained yachts, Loose Goose, Mr. Jumpa and Mustang out of the Hyannis Yacht Club.

A gourmet chef, he threw large parties at his Charlestown home.

He is survived by his mother, Hazel of Cotuit; a longtime companion, Leslie Dangel of Charlestown and her children, Justin and Julianna; a brother, Scott R. of Illinois; and many nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at John Lawrence Funeral Home, Marstons Mills.

Burial will be private.
